NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Hundreds of consumers said they fell ill after allegedly eating Lucky Charms cereal and the Food and Drug Administration is now investigating why, the New York Post reported.

The announcement comes after the Post initially reported the General Mills cereal making people sick after complaints from consumers of vomiting and diarrhea after eating a bowl.

In the days since, more than 400 people documented their illnesses, including poop turning green, on iwaspoisoned.com, a website which tracks foodborne illnesses.

The FDA told the Post it is aware of the reports “and is looking into the matter.”

“The FDA takes seriously any reports of possible adulteration of a food that may also cause illnesses or injury,” an FDA spokesperson said in a statement to the Post. “Depending on the seriousness of the problem, an FDA investigator may visit the person who made the complaint, collect product samples, and initiate inspections.”

The FDA declined to say whether they contacted General Mills but added “The complaints are also discussed with company management during these inspections.”

Last week, General Mills told the Post the company did not believe Lucky Charms were making people sick but said that there is an “ongoing review” of that matter.
