Crescent symbol set on fire outside LI mosque in possible hate crime ahead of Eid celebrations
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Suffolk County police are investigating a firebomb attack on a crescent sign outside a Long Island mosque on Monday as a possible hate crime ahead of Eid celebrations next weekend.
Video footage obtained by WABC showed two people walking up a hill from their vehicle and lighting the crescent symbol on fire outside the Masjid Fatima Al-Zahra Mosque in Ronkonkoma around midnight on Monday.
The crescent sign was set ablaze with something similar to a Molotov cocktail, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison told WABC.
The building itself was not damaged, and no injuries were reported.
The attack took place a week before Eid al-Adha, the second and biggest of the two main holidays in the Muslim community.
The Suffolk County Police Department's Hate Crimes Unit and Arson Section detectives are investigating the incident.
