NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut firefighter has died and another has been injured battling a house fire in New Haven.
Fire Chief John Alston says the fire on Valley Street was reported at about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday. When they arrived on the scene, firefighters encountered "heavy fire and flames."
Firefighters rescued an 84-year-old woman who owns the home and a man who lives on the second floor.
One firefighter reported being lost and disoriented, and a search team was sent to find him.
Two firefighters were found unconscious on the second floor of the building, and one later died of his injuries. The other is hospitalized with respiratory injuries.
Their names haven't been released.
The woman is hospitalized and is expected to recover.
Mayor Justin Elicker called the fallen firefighter "truly a hero.''
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
