NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A Georgia man was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport after TSA discovered a loaded .38 caliber handgun in his carry-on bag Friday.

TSA saw the gun through the X-ray machine at the security checkpoint in Terminal B and alerted Port Authority police who confiscated the weapon and arrested the man.

In addition to weapons charges, the unidentified man faces a fine of up to $15,000 for attempting to bring a gun through TSA security.

The man told police he forgot he had the gun on him.

“Bringing a gun to our checkpoints is a serious security and safety concern,” said New Jersey TSA Security Director Thomas Carter. “The fact that this individual told us that he forgot that he had a loaded gun with him is equally disconcerting. Responsible gun owners know where their gun is at all times. Guns should never be brought to the security checkpoint in carry-on luggage.”
