MANTUA TOWNSHIP, N.J. (1010 WINS) — An eight-year-old girl was killed and another minor and two adults were injured in a car crash on Route 55 Saturday, according to state police.

The driver of a Subaru was attempting to pass traffic by driving on a center grass median on Route 55 in Mantua Township around 1:45 p.m. when the car struck an overpass abatement — the concrete or metal pillars used to support elevated roads, officials said.

The car caught fire after the collision, injuring three passengers and killing the eight-year-old.

Two adults and a child, whose ages were not made public, were hospitalized after the crash.

The incident is under investigation, but police have not yet filed any charges against the driver.
