NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Tuesday the date for a special election to replace the recently vacated seat due to the expulsion of former Rep. George Santos from the U.S. House of Representatives.

The date is set for  Feb. 13, 2024.

“As Governor, I have the solemn responsibility to call a special election to ensure the voters of Long Island and Queens once again have representation in Congress,” Hochul said. “I look forward to working with the next representative for the 3rd Congressional District on the issues facing New Yorkers.”

The need to replace Santos began following his expulsion last Friday, with the U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson formally notifying Hochul of the vacancy.

Santos served for New York's 3rd congressional district from January to December 2023.

Hochul was then required to set a special election date within a specific timeframe - more than 70 but less than 80 days from the notice.

The candidates to succeed Santos have yet to be announced.
