EDGEWATER, N.J. (1010 WINS) – Police are investigating after someone left human feces inside a baptismal basin at a church in New Jersey.
In a Facebook post, Church of the Holy Rosary in Edgewater said the disturbing discovery was made last Wednesday afternoon—someone had left “human excrement in the baptismal font.”
The church said it will now close its doors early at 3 p.m. from Monday to Friday.
“We sincerely regret the necessity of closing the Church, thus prohibiting the well-intentioned and faithful from spending time in the Lord’s House in sacred prayer and contemplation,” the church wrote.
The discovery came “on the heels of minor robberies within the Church,” leading to the decision to close early, church officials said.
“We apologize for this inconvenience to the faithful and pray for the soul of whoever committed this abomination,” they said.
According to NJ.com, police are investigating but were unable to get fingerprints because so many people interact with the basin to bless themselves each week.
