CAPE MAY, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A three-vehicle crash happened in New Jersey on Tuesday afternoon—and fire officials said a slow-moving turtle crossing the street was to blame.

A driver was on Stone Harbor Boulevard in Stone Harbor which is a street known to be rife with turtles crossing this time of year.
The driver stopped for the turtle and two other cars collided with it. No serious injuries occurred but the cars were heavily damaged, according to authorities.
“Please make sure that when you stop for a turtle, that the drivers behind you have time to stop,” Stone Harbor Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 said. “We realize the desire to not hit a turtle, but you and others are just as important.”
Egg laying season is in full effect which means turtles are emerging from the wetlands to dry land to lay eggs. That makes them more vulnerable to predators but more importantly–cars.
Earlier this month, kindergarteners in Stone Harbor helped release 17 young turtles who were raised from eggs rescued from the smashed bodies of mothers killed on roads.
