NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Police in Yonkers are searching for the mother of a baby girl who was found abandoned and alone in a hallway Tuesday night.

The girl was found around 8:30 p.m. inside a multi-family apartment home at Chestnut Street and Riverview Place, according to Yonkers police. A resident discovered the girl unattended; she wrapped her in a blanket and contacted cops.

"Area residents heard the child crying in the hallway," said Joseph Monaco, first deputy chief at the Yonkers PD.

The child, who is believed to be a couple days old, was taken to a hospital in stable condition to be evaluated as the investigation continues.

No arrests have been reported in the case. SVU is among those investigating.

Police have been canvassing the area and looking at doorbell camera footage from nearby homes. Monaco said police want to find the mom to make sure she's okay.

"We want to look into every angle," he said. "Could the child have been taken from the mother? We don't know what the situation is, so we don't want to go right away to a criminal aspect."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Yonkers police at (914) 377-7900.
