EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A Long Island corrections officer was arrested on Wednesday for attempting to smuggle a cellphone and a drug laced bible into Nassau County Correctional Center in East Meadow on Wednesday, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office.
Agents of the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department’s Internal Affairs Unit searched Probationary Officer Javel Welch, 38, on his way into work on Wednesday.
They allegedly found a cellphone, which no prison staff are allowed to bring into the jail, and a small bible laced with K2 — a synthetic drug.
Officers also found a loaded pistol unsecured in the center console of his vehicle.
“The health and safety of our correction officers and incarcerated individuals is paramount,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. “Our correction officers are entrusted to uphold the law and maintain order. This defendant’s alleged actions compromised his integrity and could have had extremely dangerous consequences.”
Welch, who had been working at the prison since April 2022, was charged with promoting prison contraband and failure to safely store firearms. He was suspended after his arrest.
His next court date is scheduled for April 6.
