BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — Officers fatally shot a Long Island man who charged them with a knife as they attempted to perform a welfare check on Friday afternoon, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina said.

Police responded to the home of Bruce Boyd, 54, near Zane Court and Wurz Street in Brentwood at about 12:45 p.m. after being called in for a welfare check, officials said.

“The officers were met by Mr. Boyd’s wife in front of the house, who subsequently opens the front door for the officers, who enter and encounter Mr. Boyd holding a knife drenched in blood from what appears to be at least two self-inflicted wounds,” Catalina said.

They retreated the length of the front lawn while yelling commands for Boyd to drop the knife, but police said that Boyd did not comply.

“Mr. Boyd continues charging at the officers at which point at least one officer discharges their firearm, striking Mr. Boyd,” Catalina said.

The cops began life-saving measures and continued until the ambulance arrived. Boyd was taken to South Short University Hospital in Bay Shore where he died of his injuries.

Boyd was a retired New York City Department of Correction officer, authorities said.
