LAKE RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A man was arrested for violently carjacking a driver at a Long Island gas station and fleeing the scene in the stolen vehicle, Suffolk County Police said Monday.
The victim was sitting in a 2022 Toyota Corolla in the parking lot of USA Gas Mart in Lake Ronkonkoma at 11:55 p.m. Sunday when James Fenner entered the car and punched him, according to police.
When the victim exited the vehicle, the suspect took off in the car, police said.
Members of the highway patrol tailed Fenner, 20, as he drove west on the Long Island Expressway to the Northern State Parkway before exiting at Glen Cove Road.
He lost control of the car soon after exiting the parkway and crashed into a wooded area at 12:25 a.m.
Fenner fled the scene of the crash on foot but officers found him a short time later. He was taken to Nassau University Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries he sustained in the crash.
Detectives charged Fenner, of Bay Shore, with second-degree robbery, third-degree grand larceny and third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle.
Fenner is to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip later today.
