ELMONT, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A Long Island man who had an active arrest warrant against him attacked two Nassau County police officers who tried to bring him into custody on Saturday afternoon, officials said.
The officers were on routine patrol when they recognized 28-year-old Hurguens Jasmin of Elmont, who had an outstanding warrant.
They spotted Jasmin walking on Dutch Broadway in the vicinity of Opal Street and approached him, but he became violent and combative, police said.
Jasmin is accused of punching one officer in the face repeatedly, causing substantial pain, before trying to gouge out the eyes of another officer in his attempt to flee the scene.
He was taken into custody and transported to a local area hospital for evaluation.
The injured officers were also evaluated at a nearby hospital.
Jasmin is charged with two counts of second-degree assault, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and having an active Nassau County warrant, police said.
An investigation showed that Jasmin also is the subject of a Fifth Precinct case for two counts of criminal contempt.
He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday and pleaded not guilty, court records show. A temporary order of protection was issued against him, and despite prosecutors' request for bail, he was released under non-monetary conditions.
