NORTH BELLPORT, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A school bus driver involved in a crash on Long Island Wednesday was arrested after he "refused" to let first responders evaluate kids on scene and then got into an altercation with cops, Suffolk County police said.
Five children, a school aide and the driver were aboard the bus around 7:50 a.m. when it collided with a sedan at Head of the Neck Road and Bellport Avenue in North Bellport.
When medical personnel arrived at the scene, the driver wouldn’t let them evaluate the kids on the bus and got into an altercation with responding officers, according to the SCPD.
Police didn’t immediately indicate what rational the bus driver gave for hampering the medical personnel.
The five kids—ages 10 to 14—were ultimately taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, as were the bus driver, the aide and the driver of the sedan.
The bus driver, identified as Steven Edwards, was charged with five counts of endangering the welfare of a child, two counts of obstruction of governmental administration, harassment, and resisting arrest. He was issued a desk appearance ticket.
