NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 16-year-old boy who was surfing on a Fire Island beach was bitten by a shark on Wednesday — the sixth Long Island shark attack this summer, according to the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau.

The shark attacked around 5:45 p.m. on Kismet Beach, leaving its victim with a minor bite, according to officials.
The surfer was able to walk out of the water without assistance, and Saltaire Fire Rescue rushed him to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for treatment.
Police sent a helicopter to scour the water for the shark, but officers were unable to locate the dangerous animal.
Marine Bureau officers are continuing the search via boat.
This is the sixth shark attack on Long Island beaches this summer — an unusually high number.
Shark sightings are also up, and a baby great white shark washed up on a Long Island beach Wednesday morning.
Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday ordered state agencies to increase their shark patrols in light of the attacks.
