NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) —A fox believed to have rabies and been involved in recent attacks on dogs in Summit, New Jersey, on Monday was captured, police said.

The fox was under examination for rabies by animal control on Tuesday, according to the Summit Police Department.

Over the past few days, three separate animal attacks have been reported in Summit.

Two of these attacks were by a fox, while the third was a coyote.

On Sunday, in the Dale Drive area, a dog fell prey to a coyote, which later retreated into a nearby forested zone.

Then on Monday night, two different dog attacks took place near the junction of Mountain Avenue and Larned Road, likely by the potentially rabid fox.

None of the dogs sustained serious injuries.

The suspected fox was located on Tuesday morning around Mountain Avenue and Tulip Street. This is nearly a block away from the site of the dog attacks on Monday evening, Amy Cairns, the city spokeswoman, told NJ.com.

The city's officials urged residents to practice caution when outdoors, especially during the twilight hours.

"If you are outdoors and encounter a fox during the day, it is not necessarily a reason for concern. A healthy fox, when encountering humans, will typically flee. However, should the fox display aggressive behavior, seem ill, or exhibit an unusual lack of fear towards humans, residents should maintain their distance and immediately report the incident to the Summit Police non-emergency line at 908-273-0051."
