NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Two people are dead and 11 were injured in a 5-alarm fire that broke out at a Bronx building on Tuesday afternoon, according to the FDNY.

First responders were met with heavy fire on the first floor of the building, located on East 187th Street between Belmont and Cambreleng avenues.


The flames quickly spread up the stairs and to every floor of the five-story building, burning through the building's interior that was made entirely of wood. The building sustained major damage, from collapsed stairs to a collapsed roof.

Two people were killed in the blaze, and six other civilians were injured, two seriously, fire officials said. Five firefighters also suffered minor injuries, and all the victims were transported to local area hospitals.Over 250 fire and EMS personnel responded to the fire. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
