1 killed as fire engulfs top floor of West Village townhouse

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – One person was killed as a fire tore through a top floor apartment at a townhouse in the West Village on Wednesday morning, the FDNY said.

The fire erupted around 7:20 a.m. at 142 Waverly Pl., between Grove Street and Sixth Avenue.

Sixty firefighters and EMS personnel responded to fire, which was on the fifth floor of the five-story building.

The victim died at the scene and has not yet been identified.

The fire was brought under control shortly after 8:30 a.m., the FDNY said.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
