FIRE ISLAND, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A person was airlifted to a hospital after two boats collided in the Atlantic Ocean Wednesday morning, approximately 17 miles south of Fire Island Inlet.

At around 6 a.m., the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound received a radio report of the crash involving two vessels, the 31-foot Birth Control, which had two people on board, and the 29-foot Ocean Runner, also with two people on board.

According to the Coast Guard, one person was initially thrown into the water but was quickly recovered by the crew of the Ocean Runner. The person suffered injuries and was airlifted by an NYPD helicopter to a local hospital. There has been no update on their condition.

Coast Guard crews from Station Fire Island and Station Jones Beach responded to the scene to assist with dewatering one of the vessels and towed both boats back to Station Fire Island. No other injuries were reported in the incident.
