NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An apartment fire in the Bronx on Monday left a 1-year-old boy dead, two other young children in critical condition and at least four others injured, according to the FDNY.

The blaze broke out just before 3:40 p.m. at 2609 Bainbridge Ave., a six-story dwelling between East 193rd and 194th streets in the Fordham section.

The 1-year-old boy who died was found inside the second-floor apartment where officials said the fire broke out, alongside two 6-year-old children who are in critical condition. Authorities said that the boy was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.

Two other civilians were injured, including one who was in serious condition and taken to a local hospital, and another who suffered minor injuries and refused medical attention, the FDNY said. Three firefighters sustained minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Malcolm Moore, like in other recent deadly fires, the door to the fire apartment was left open, exasperating the effects of the flames.

"The minute you close that door, you give everyone else in that building the opportunity to flee," Moore said.

The blaze was under control about an hour after it broke out, and the cause is under investigation.
