NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Fifteen parking structures have been issued vacate orders by the city Department of Buildings since last month's deadly garage collapse in Manhattan, the agency said Thursday.

Building inspectors found cracks in walls and ceilings, corroded and rusted beams, exposed rebar and other violations during the sweeps, which are ongoing.

As of Thursday morning, a total of 187 facilities have been inspected citywide since the collapse at 57 Ann St. on April 18 killed a worker and injured five others.

The impacted buildings include commercial garages as well as residential buildings with garages.

The DOB said many of the vacate orders were partial vacate orders, meaning only a portion of the building has to be closed. However, the department issued full vacate orders at some buildings that had "fallen into deep disrepair, to the point that they were no longer safe to occupy."

Most of the locations were targeted for sweeps because they had open DOB-issued violations indicating the potential for similar conditions to what was found at the 98-year-old Ann Street garage before it partially collapsed, officials said.

"As we continue our targeted parking structure enforcement sweeps, garage owners and New Yorkers should know that that DOB is taking swift action to protect the public from unsafe buildings," the department said in a statement, adding they'd "use every tool at our disposal to protect the public."
