NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An inmate at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center died of COVID-19 on Friday, marking the federal jail's first virus-related inmate fatality, according to a report.
Edwin Segarra, 46, died of complications related to the virus at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn on Friday, after testing positive on Jan. 25, the Daily News reported.
Nearly 300 inmates at the jail have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began, the outlet reported.
Segarra reportedly had both high blood pressure and diabetes. He was being held on drug, robbery and weapons charges, according to the outlet.
