NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- One construction worker died and another was injured when a retaining wall collapsed in Brooklyn on Monday, authorities said.

The two men were working behind a two-story home on 42nd Street, between 4th and 5th avenues in Sunset Park, on Monday afternoon when a nine-foot retaining wall in a neighboring backyard collapsed onto them, FDNY officials said.

One of the men, whose name and age weren't immediately released, was pronounced dead at the scene, the FDNY said. The second man was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition, the department said.

A spokesperson for the city's Department of Buildings said officials inspected at a retaining wall at the site in May 2014 after the department received complaints about it, but didn't find any evidence that the wall was bulging or in danger of collapsing.

The department has not received any complaints about the wall since then, the spokesperson said. An investigation is ongoing.
