NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Police are searching for two women who scammed a woman out of over $40,000 worth of cash and jewelry outside a Queens cemetery last month.
The women, who police said were between the ages of 40 and 50, approached the victim on the corner of Metropolitan Avenue and 80th Street on the edge of St. John Cemetery around 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 17.
They told her they needed help cashing a winning lottery ticket and convinced her to hand over about $6,500 in cash and about $36,000 worth of jewelry.
After she handed over her valuables, they asked her for proof of address.
When she went home to get the documents, the scammers fled.
Police are asking anyone with information on the scam to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Anonymous tips can also be submitted on the Crime Stoppers website or on Twitter @NYPDTips.
