NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A woman was critically wounded and a man was hit by a stray bullet during a road-rage shootout between two vehicles on the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx early Sunday morning, police said.
The gunfire erupted around 5 a.m. on the southbound lanes of the expressway, just before exit 5 near 161st Street.
Police said the occupants of two vehicles—a Mercedes SUV and a dark-colored SUV—were shooting at each other as they were speeding down the highway.
A 27-year-old woman in the Mercedes was shot in the back. She was taken by private means to Harlem Hospital, where she was in critical condition.
A 35-year-old man driving a Ford Edge was shot in the leg by a stray bullet. He was taken by EMS to Lincoln Hospital. Police said it appeared he was a bystander who had nothing to do with the shootout.
Police were searching for the dark-colored SUV, which took off after the shooting. It's unclear if anyone besides the woman was in the Mercedes SUV.
No arrests have been reported.
