NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Eight people—including four young children were injured Saturday night after a masked gunman opened fire on a family barbecue in Coney Island, authorities said.

The shooting took place just after 10:30 p.m. in the vicinity of West 30th Street and Surf Avenue when a man wearing a ski mask approached the outdoor gathering and began shooting into the crowd before fleeing the scene, officials said.

"I have kids around the same age, so it was my niece was outside as well. I was nervous. I live on the other side of this building," one neighbor told 1010 WINS.

First responders rushed all eight victims to an area hospital where a 21-year-old woman who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest remains in critical condition.

The remaining adult victims are currently in stable condition and recovering from various injuries including a 37-year-old man who was treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder, a 33-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, and a 25-year-old woman who was shot in the leg.

According to the police, a 14-year-old boy was shot in the thigh, a 12-year-old boy was shot the leg, a 7-year-old boy suffered gunshot wounds to both legs, and a 6-year-old boy was shot in the stomach.

"Then all of a sudden you see like 100 cop cars. It was crazy," another resident said. "I'm a single father. I've been raising my son 11 years now by myself, so to think about someone's child getting hurt, that's absurd. It's nuts."

Police confirmed that a firearm was recovered at the scene.

The gunman remains at large. Officials said there is no known motive for the shooting at this time. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
