New York City makes six appearances on the list, put out by William Reed Business Media, a U.K. company that also puts out the a list of the world’s 50 best restaurants.

The major focus is on the top 50 — in which NYC appears three times, but the company also has a Nos. 51-100 list as well.

The city’s top represented bar is Katana Kitten, coming in at No. 10, located in the Greenwich Village at 531 Hudson St. The Japanese-American bar’s Masahiro Urushido even has a book called “The Art of the Cocktail” up for sale.

Next up is Dante, located in Greenwich Village at 79-81 MacDougal St. Dante was actually the overall No. 2 bar on the previous list, but now comes in at No. 30.

The registered NYC landmark has been open for over 100 years, transforming from a cafe into one of America’s top bars over the years.

And then at No. 34 is the Lower East Side’s Attaboy, located at 134 Eldridge St. The classic spot took home the “2021 Rémy Martin Legend of the List,” appearing nine times so far. The listmakers say over the years the spot with no menu "hasn’t lost its leading edge."

Only one other U.S. city even appears in the top 50 (Miami’s Cafe La Trova), while London’s Connaught Bar took the top spot again, followed by fellow London spot Tayer + Elementary.

In the Nos. 51-100 list, New York City makes three more appearances. The Lower East Side’s Double Chicken Please is at No. 54, West Village’s Employees Only takes No. 60 and Brooklyn’s Leyenda comes in at No. 100.

Midtown’s Nomad Bar dropped off the list from last year, where it was No. 13. It was the only NYC bar represented on last year’s list to not appear again in 2021.

The U.S. is much better represented in the latter half of the list — with appearances from Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago.

The list first was published in 2008, with either the U.K. or U.S. winning top spot each year — Dante and The Dead Rabbit won in past years for NYC.

The list is determined by votes sent in from hundreds of industry experts, but no specific criteria is beholden to them for what they choose.
