NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A major water main break flooded part of the Cross Bronx Expressway on Thursday morning, shutting down a stretch of the roadway and leading to the rescue of multiple drivers.
The main broke on Jerome Avenue, near 175th Street, in Morris Heights around 3:30 a.m.
The main had been capped shortly before 7 a.m. but not before flooding the expressway, which was shut down in both directions at Jerome Avenue, causing major traffic issues.
Eight people had to be rescued from seven vehicles stranded by the flood waters, according to officials. No injuries were reported.
Although the water had receded by 7 a.m., water was still up to at least the wheel wells of some vehicles. Citizen App video shows vehicles driving through the floodwaters.

The break also led to 90-minute delays at the George Washington Bridge.
