8 unvaccinated NYPD members have 'serious' COVID-19 cases: report
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Eight members of the NYPD who chose not to get vaccinated against COVID-19 are in serious condition after contracting the virus, Commissioner Dermot Shea said Thursday, according to a report.
Shea made the announcement in a video message played for his police force, the New York Post reported. The eight members battling COVID-19 were "all perfectly healthy," previously, he noted.
Several of them are now on ventilators, he added, according to the outlet.
In the video, the commissioner implored non-vaccinated NYPD members to get the shot.
"Why do I keep coming back to you on this? Because I'm talking to family members, I'm talking to union representatives of multiple ranks, I'm talking to you and your partners when it's too late, when you're in the hospital, or you're driving to the hospital, and you have a difficulty breathing," he reportedly said.
"If you wait, it could be too late," he added.
In an interview with 1010 WINS on Thursday, Shea said the NYPD currently has a 62% vaccination rate.
