The incarcerated person, whose name has not yet been released, died at Bellevue Hospital’s Prison Ward around 11:34 a.m., officials said.

“Any death in custody is a tragedy, and it’s disheartening to hear about the passing of this individual,” DOC Commissioner Louis A. Molina said in a statement. “To learn that a loved one passed away while incarcerated is not only devastating, but extremely traumatizing. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who loved this individual.”

Officials from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are still investigating the person’s cause of death.

The death comes just one day after a man was pronounced dead at Rikers Island’s George R. Vierno Center early Monday morning.
