NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Mayor-elect Eric Adams said this weekend he's trying to coax Long Island Rep. Tom Suozzi to join his administration as a deputy mayor.

"Somehow, I'm trying to convince him to be a deputy mayor in my administration. But now as a congressman, he has always been a clear voice for this city and I think it's important that we raise that as we move forward," Adams said, at an unrelated Queens news conference Saturday, as Suozzi stood by him.

Suozzi, a Democrat representing Glen Clove, is an attorney who also served as the Nassau County executive in the 2000s. Suozzi said he was "flattered" byt Adams' comments and that he'll be mulling it over in the days ahead.

"I am very flattered that the mayor-elect would like me to help him in a big way to tackle the challenges in NYC,"  Suozzi said in a statement. "It's a testament to our great friendship and his confidence that I know how to help run a big government, get things done and solve problems. Lots to think about over Thanksgiving."

Adams is currently working to build out a new administration. He has said he plans to announce his picks for police commissioner and schools chancellor shortly after Thanksgiving.
