NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) -- Flights into Newark Liberty International Airport were disrupted after equipment issues affected some radio frequencies for air traffic controllers, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
While the order grounding traffic has been lifted, the FAA is slowing flights into Newark’s airport, the agency said by email on Thursday. Teterboro airport, which is a hub for private jets flying into New York City, had also issued a ground stop earlier, according to the FAA website.
Thursday’s disruption comes ahead of the Labor Day weekend, one of the busiest periods for travel in the US.
The Philadelphia TRACON center, which handles arrivals and departures for Newark, was the same facility that lost radar and communication for more than a minute in late-April, which snarled flights and prompted calls for the modernization of the US’s air traffic control systems.
