NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An MTA worker made a shocking discovery inside a lower Manhattan subway station trash can on Friday when he found a high-power semi-automatic rifle, the NYPD said.

At about 3 p.m., a subway cleaner was removing trash at the Cortlandt Street station when he found what appeared to be a black rifle, police said on Saturday.

Further investigation determined that the weapon was an unloaded AM-15.

An AM-15 is an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle made by the United States company Anderson Manufacturing.

The subway station where the gun was discovered is about two blocks from the World Trade Center and 9/11 Memorial & Museum.

Where the weapon originally came from was not immediately clear.
