NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – President Joe Biden has a jam-packed schedule during his three-day trip to New York City this week, including a big speech at the U.N. General Assembly and multiple fundraisers.
Biden arrived at JFK Airport on Sunday evening, flew to the Wall Street heliport and then headed to Greenwich Village by motorcade for dinner.
The president, first lady Jill Biden and their daughter Ashley Biden dined at Il Cantinori, a longtime Italian eatery on East 10th Street known for celebrity sightings.
According to a schedule released by the White House, Biden will take part in two campaign fundraising receptions on Monday, including one with the first lady.
On Tuesday, he'll give a major address at the U.N. General Assembly and then take part in a bilateral meeting with U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres.
He'll also host a meeting Tuesday of the Central Asia 5 +1, a diplomatic platform that includes the U.S. plus Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
The president will wrap the day by joining the first lady to host the Leader’s Reception at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Biden will kick off Wednesday with a bilateral meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He'll then take part in a bilateral meeting and a labor-focused event with Brazilian President Lula da Silva.
The president will finish his New York trip with two campaign receptions Wednesday and then return to the White House.
Some 150 heads of state are in the city this week for the 78th U.N. General Assembly. Their agenda includes issues like the war in Ukraine, climate change, economic instability, widening inequality and COVID-19. Among the speakers will be Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who will make his first in-person appearance at the U.N. headquarters since Russia's invasion.
The NYPD has tightened security in Manhattan for the annual event. The city Department of Transportation declared every day this week a Gridlock Alert Day, with traffic expected to be especially congested in Midtown.
