
NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed in Brownsville, Brooklyn on Sunday morning and police are searching for the culprit, according to the NYPD.
The boy was killed just before 10:25 a.m. at a building that is part of NYCHA’s Howard Houses, 80 Osborn Street.
He was shot in the chest, and EMS transported him to Brookdale University Medical Center and Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately clear.
According to multiple reports, a suspect is in custody and a gun was recovered.
The investigation is ongoing.
According to the latest NYPD data, the 73rd Precinct—which encompasses Brownsville and Ocean Hill—has seen significant increases in shootings and homicides when comparing this point in the year with the same timeframe last year.
Through May 26, homicides increased 200% from four in 2023 to 12 in 2024 year-to-date. In the same period there have been 23 shootings with 27 injuries in 2024 compared to 14 shootings with 15 injuries in 2023.
