Bronx man charged with pouring gasoline on NYPD van during protest

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Bronx man who allegedly poured gasoline on an occupied NYPD van during a protest earlier this month has been arrested, the department said Thursday.

Christopher Springs, 22, was with a group that was tossing eggs and trash at an NYPD van during a protest near the 46th Precinct in Fordham Heights on Sept. 3 when he poured a liquid that smelled like gasoline onto the vehicle, police said.

The officers inside the van drove off uninjured, the NYPD said.

Springs — who was also accused of helping other protesters toss a metal barricade into the air near the precinct — has been charged with attempted arson, reckless endangerment and rioting, police said.

His attorney information wasn't immediately available Thursday.

The group held the protest after an off-duty NYPD officer fatally shot a 24-year-old man, Michael Rosado, on Aug. 29.

Police told ABC7 Rosado and his father got into a dispute near East 180th Street and Valentine Avenue in Fordham Heights around 4:15 a.m. that morning.

At some point during the dispute, Rosado fired several shots, the outlet reported.

Two officers who were leaving the nearby 46th Precinct at the time responded to the scene, at which point Rosado shot at them, according to the outlet.

The officers returned fire, hitting Rosado in the torso, the outlet reported. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
