NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Bronx man was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being sentenced to 10 years in prison for setting his ex-girlfriend’s apartment on fire, Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark today announced Thursday.
Additionally, Michael Williams, 57, was sentenced to five years post-release supervision for second-degree arson and second-degree burglary. He was found guilty of the charges on Sept. 24, 2024.
According to the facts brought out at trial, on June 1, 2023, the victim left her apartment on Mohegan Avenue, which she formerly shared with Williams. During the day Williams called her multiple times arguing over their relationship.
Williams broke into the apartment and set fire to a mattress in one bedroom and to a futon in another bedroom. He then turned on a stove burner and left the apartment, prosecutors said.
Building residents were forced to evacuate and the apartment had blackened walls and extensive smoke and water damage.
"After an argument with his ex-girlfriend, the defendant broke into the apartment they had shared and set fire to a mattress and futon," D.A. Clark said. "In his desire to do harm to the victim, he also placed everyone in the building in jeopardy. Fortunately, no one was injured. The defendant has been held accountable for his reckless actions.”
