NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A new survey revealed that over one-third of NYC residents admitted to littering, with the Bronx and Queens as the boroughs with the highest amount of chronic litterers.
In March, more than 1,000 NYC residents who are representative of the five boroughs, and balanced by gender, age, race and ethnicity, were surveyed online by the Sanitation Foundation, in collaboration with Dreyfus Advisors.
Almost half of Bronx residents admitted to littering, with males between the ages of 18 to 34 years old the worst offenders, according to the survey.
According to the data collected, 16% saying they’d confronted strangers for throwing trash on the ground while 30% said they never littered.
A significant 80% of residents surveyed believe litter is a major issue in NYC but only 62% of respondents reported always disposing of their litter correctly with the top two reasons being "There wasn’t a trash can around when I needed one" and "It was a small item."
There are currently over 20,000 litter baskets across the city, although since 2015 the sanitation department received approximately 2,700 annual requests for new ones.
