Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the nominations Thursday, saying a designation would “help ensure there are resources available to protect these iconic places.”

Among the nominees is Brooklyn’s St. Peter’s Protestant Episcopal Church, located on State Street in Boerum Hill.

The governor’s office says the church — which now is known as St. Nicholas Antiochan Orthodox Cathedral — played a role in creating an Arabic-speaking Orthodox Christian community in the borough.

Syrian and Lebanese immigrants who initially formed a congregation in the late-1800s moved to Brooklyn years later and purchased to church in 1920.

It is the oldest, continually used Antiochan Orthodox Christian church in North America, officials said. It held its first service in 1857, according to documents.

Also nominated is St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church, located in Northport on Long Island.

The church was completed in 1873 and still retains its original design, featuring Romaneqsue and Italianate elements.

The governor’s office says the church is still used today, and “represents the long presence and influence of the Methodist religion on this part of Long Island."

The church voted years ago to join a network welcoming people of all sexual orientations and identities, according to its website.

Being listed on state or national registers can help owners revitalize properties and make them eligible for preservation programs, state grants and tax credits, state officials said.

A National Park Service study on the impact of the tax credits in New York found from 2015-2019, the credits generated nearly 68,000 jobs nationally and more than $195 million in local, state and federal taxes.
