NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 26-year-old man confessed to murdering his 18-year-old girlfriend while their five-month-old son slept in his crib nearby, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office announced on Wednesday.

Dylan Diaz allegedly fought with his girlfriend Damaris Maravilla in their Bensonhurst home over the care of their infant son on May 5. The next morning, Diaz put his arm around Maravilla’s neck and strangled her until unconscious, according to prosecutors.
He then sexually assaulted her while she was unconscious and fatally snapped her neck when he finished the assault, officials said.
He called a relative who works for the NYPD around 10 a.m. When officers arrived at the home, they found Maravilla’s body, according to authorities.
Police said he confessed to the murder after his arrest.
“This was a depraved and despicable act that left an innocent young woman dead, an infant boy to grow up without his mother, and an entire family traumatized with grief,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “We will now seek to bring this defendant to justice for his alleged actions.”
Diaz had been dating Maravilla for two years, since Maravilla was 16 and he was 24, according to the DA’s office.
The age of consent in New York is 17.
Diaz was charged with second-degree murder at his indictment and arraignment on Wednesday.
If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
The judge ordered he be held without bail, and his next court date is scheduled for July 13.
