NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A man was sentenced on Thursday after pleading guilty to the murder of his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend while dropping off their two-year-old child at her apartment in NYCHA's Gowanus Houses.

Rudolph Riley, 32, of Brownsville, pleaded guilty to the charge of first-degree manslaughter on Feb. 23, 2024, and on Thursday was sentenced to 20 years in prison and five years' post-release supervision for the crime.

Prosecutors said that, according to the evidence, Riley was arguing with his ex-girlfriend inside her apartment at the Gowanus Houses on Hoyt Street on May 26, 2020 after dropping off the two-year old child they share.

The woman's boyfriend, Cory Turner, 34, attempted to intervene in the argument, and Riley shot him in the arm and chest with a 40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun, officials said.

Turner was rushed to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and later pronounced dead.

Riley fled the scene, leaving his child at the apartment, but was stopped soon after by a detective who recognized his description from a radio alert.

During the conversation, the defendant dropped the handgun wrapped in a red bandana from under his arm, which ballistic analysis later matched to the shooting.

Riley was arrested at the scene.

"The defendant's guilty plea and today's sentence hold him accountable for a senseless act that took the life of an innocent man," Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said. "In Brooklyn, we are deeply committed to ending this type of violence.
