NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A New Jersey man was shot near Penn Station in Manhattan as he happened to walk by a dispute between two others during Monday's evening rush hour, according to police.

The 58-year-old victim was a bystander in the area — on his way to meet his wife — when a gunman fired off a shot at another man near West 31st Street and 7th Avenue before 6 p.m., police said.

The victim was shot in the leg and was transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, police said.

The incident began with a dispute inside Penn Station, possibly when the shooter asked another man for food, according to police.

The argument between the two men then spilled onto the street, when one of them pulled out a gun from his backpack and fired a single round, Shea said.

That bullet struck the New Jersey man who was walking nearby, according to Shea. Cops who rushed to the scene applied a tourniquet to the victim's leg to help stop the bleeding, police said.

None of the men are believed to have known each other previously, according to the NYPD.

The man involved in the dispute with the shooter recently moved to the New York City area from Arizona and stuck around to speak with the NYPD, according to police.

Citizen App video shows police and emergency personnel descending on the area just outside of an entrance to Madison Square Garden.

According to Citizen, all southbound traffic at West 34th Street and 7th Avenue and westbound traffic at West 33rd Street and 6th Avenue was halted in the wake of the shooting.
