NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A 7-year-old boy was struck and killed by an NYPD tow truck driver as he walked with his mother in Brooklyn on Thursday morning, police said.
The child was hit at 7:50 a.m. at Myrtle and North Portland avenues, just north of Fort Greene Park, NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said.
The tow truck driver was traveling westbound on Myrtle Avenue and attempting to make a right turn onto North Portland Avenue just as the 7-year-old boy and his mother were crossing North Portland Avenue.
“As the department tow truck made the right turn and started to pass the crosswalk, the young child who was walking with his mother was struck,” Maddrey said. “The child went down. The tow truck operator stopped immediately. EMS arrived at the scene and immediately pronounced the young child DOA at the scene.”
The civilian NYPD driver had a vehicle in tow and was headed to the Brooklyn tow pound on Navy Street, a few blocks north of the scene, according to Maddrey.
No additional details were immediately available as the investigation continued Thursday. Maddrey said detectives were taking accounts from witnesses and reviewing surveillance video.
