NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday that Citi Field will begin operating as a 24-7 COVID-19 vaccine site on Wednesday, catering to taxi drivers, food-industry workers, as well as eligible Queens residents.

"This is one we've been hoping for for a long time, getting up and running," the mayor said.

Vaccinations at the Mets stadium in Queens were scheduled to open last month but were postponed due to a shortage of supplies.

According to city officials, half of the shots at Citi Field will be reserved for Queens residents who are eligible to receive them under state guidelines, while the other half will be for TLC licensees and food delivery workers.

"The focus will be on residents of the borough of Queens," de Blasio said during the briefing. "There also will be a special vaccination effort at Citi Field, because they have a huge parking lot there, for TLC drivers."
