NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Two police officers shot a 42-year-old Bronx man with a knife who was experiencing a mental health crisis after his father called 911 to request help, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said at a press conference.

The man’s father called around 10 a.m. to report his son was in crisis, had a knife and believed he was being “followed and persecuted,” according to officials.

The father also warned over the phone that his son said “if any cops show up here today I will kill them,” Chell said.

Despite this warning, the NYPD sent two officers to the father’s apartment on Grand Concourse near East Kingsbridge Road in Van Cortlandt Village.

Law enforcement claims the man moved toward them while holding a kitchen knife and refused orders to stop.

The police shot the man, and he was moved to a local hospital in critical condition.

Officials said the officers were wearing body cameras at the time of the shooting, though that footage is not yet publicly available.
