NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The NYPD on Thursday suspended four officers who were caught on video failing to do anything when a gunman fired a shot on a Harlem street corner.
According to a Daily News report, the officers were on a "crime reduction" assignment when the shot was fired Monday night at the corner of 136th Street and Seventh Avenue.
Two of the officers were reportedly at the scene in a marked police vehicle and two other officers on foot patrol were said to be leaning against a wall just around the corner.
Video obtained by the Daily News from the scene showed the marked police vehicle parked just feet from a group of men, who were drinking and gambling on the corner, just moments before the shot rang out.
It remains unclear if the officers inside the police cruiser were watching the men on the corner, but when the shot was fired, the officers were never seen exiting the vehicle.
In fact, the Daily News reports that the driver of the NYPD SUV even moved the vehicle so that one of the men in the group could get into a nearby car and drive away.
Meanwhile, the two officers on foot patrol were only seen walking to the corner after the group of men had already scattered. They reportedly never offered assistance to anyone who remained at the scene.
They also did not offer aid to one man who was seen on video limping away from the corner and reportedly had shot himself in the leg.
The man allegedly sought treatment at Harlem Hospital and was charged days later with criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment, according to the report.
The Daily News reports police received a 911 call for shots fired at the location but the officers at the scene allegedly reported the incident as fireworks instead.
As a result, the four officers have been suspended without pay, effective immediately.
The NYPD is investigating if the shooting was intentional or accidental.
