NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson officially launched his campaign for comptroller on Tuesday, with a promise to secure COVID-19 relief for "the New Yorkers who need it the most.”
“Today, I’m launching my campaign to be the 45th Comptroller of New York City — the greatest city in the world,” Johnson wrote on Twitter. “As a poor kid growing up in public housing, I never thought I would one day get to be of service to others.”
“I will be a strong and independent comptroller who uses all the powers of the office to kick-start New York’s recovery,” he added. “I’m going to make sure that every dollar we get for COVID relief is targeted directly to our recovery and the New Yorkers who need it the most.”
Johnson, who is term-limited, announced in September that he would not run for mayor of New York City in light of an ongoing battle with depression.
“It was no secret that I had been considering a run for mayor, and that I have put my campaign on pause for the past six months,” he said at the time.
"This challenging time has led me to rethink how I can best be of service to this city, and I have come to the conclusion that this is not the right path for me," he explained. "In the same spirit of openness, I would also add that I have been dealing with some personal challenges over the past few months, namely — depression."
