NYC correction officer charged in brawl that left man, 20, stabbed: cops

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A New York City Department of Correction officer has been arrested in connection with a Chinatown brawl in which a 20-year-old man was stabbed, the NYPD said.

Jimmy Wu, 28, was arrested and charged with assault, attempted gang assault, attempted assault and menacing Thursday morning, police said Friday.

Wu, who was assigned to the Anna M. Kross Center on Rikers Island, has been suspended pending the outcome of his criminal case, a spokesperson for the Department of Correction said Friday.

"The arrest of one of our Correction Officers on a charge of gang assault is deeply troubling," DOC Commissioner Vincent Schiraldi said in a statement. "This agency has no tolerance for behavior either on or off duty that is dangerous and jeopardizes public safety."

Police said Wu was one of several people who attacked a 20-year-old man during a dispute in front of a building on Mott Street, near Pell Street, in Chinatown around 4 a.m. on June 27.

At some point during the fight, the 20-year-old was stabbed in the torso with a sharp object, the NYPD said.

It wasn't immediately clear who stabbed the man. An investigation is ongoing.

Wu's attorney information wasn't immediately available Friday.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
