NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A man and woman's first date in Manhattan took a turn for the worse early Tuesday when they were carjacked at gunpoint by two thieves who cops tracked down to the Bronx, police said.
The man and woman had met for the first time and were sitting in a 2021 BMW sedan at West 38th Street and Seventh Avenue in Midtown at 3:15 a.m. when two men in their 20s approached the vehicle.
One of the men brandished a firearm and forced the couple out of the vehicle at gunpoint, pistol-whipping the man during the altercation, police said.
The men got in the BMW and took off—but police used the BMW tracking app to track down the stolen vehicle to the Bronx.
The app showed the BMW was on the Major Deegan Expressway, near Van Cortlandt Park South, police said. When the carjackers realized they were being followed, they abandoned the car on the expressway and fled on foot.
The NYPD's canine and aviation units searched the area but were unable to locate the two suspects, police said. They remained at large Tuesday.
As for the victims—the man declined further medical attention at the scene, while the woman took off before she could be assessed, it's unclear why.
An investigation into the robbery is ongoing.
