NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Bill de Blasio is reportedly considering a run for Congress after state Democrats redrew New York's 11th congressional district to include a swath of Brooklyn where the former mayor lives.

Former Rep. Max Rose, a Democrat like de Blasio, is eyeing a rematch against Republican Rep. Nicole Malliotakis after she beat him in 2020 to take the district, which includes all of New York City’s most GOP-friendly borough, Staten Island, as well as a slice of southern Brooklyn.

However, on Wednesday the Democrat-dominated state legislature approved new political maps that would stretch the district to include more of Brooklyn, including liberal enclaves like Park Slope, where de Blasio lives.

Sources told both the New York Post and Politico that the progressive de Blasio is now considering challenging the moderate Rose in the Democratic primary, a move that reportedly has Democratic legislators fuming, as they had assumed Rose was a safe bet to challenge Malliotakis and take back the swing district.

“The Democratic Party is not happy about this,” a source told the Post on Wednesday. “The last thing they want is a primary race where money is wasted and there is mudslinging.”

“However, no one is surprised because de Blasio never listens to anyone,” the source added.

1010 WINS has reached out to de Blasio for comment.

De Blasio, who campaigned for president in 2019, handed the reins to Eric Adams in January after eight years as mayor due to term limits. There had been widespread speculation the former mayor would run for New York governor this year, but he ultimately decided not to.

Rose campaigned against de Blasio’s record when he was seeking reelection in 2020, labeling Hizzoner “the worst mayor in the history of New York City.”

Malliotakis, meanwhile, took to Twitter on Wednesday, calling Rose and de Blasio "two radical peas in a pod."

Malliotakis also slammed the gerrymandering of her district as “a blatant attempt by the Democrat leadership in Albany to steal this seat, even after New Yorkers voted twice by ballot referendum for non-partisan maps.”
